The Giant Mine Oversight Board (GMOB) released its 2023 Annual Report. The report is required pursuant to the Giant Mine Remediation Project Environmental Agreement. It summarizes the activities of the Board over the past year and sets out GMOB’s observations and recommendations regarding various aspects of the Giant Mine Remediation Project. The managers of the Giant Mine Remediation Project are the Government of Canada (Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada – CIRNAC) and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT).
In addition to reporting on the activities of the Board, the report provides an update on past recommendations and includes nine new recommendations. The work of GMOB and its recommendations are intended to ensure that the remediation of the Giant Mine site proceeds in a manner that is environmentally sound, socially responsible, and culturally appropriate.
